Back in the mid-1990s, the Subaru Outback was simply a trim option for the Legacy wagon, adding a bit of protective body cladding and slightly raised suspension. However, the Legacy Outback's excellent versatility and improved off-road manners proved to be a hit, especially among more outdoorsy customers. So, Subaru decided to spin off the Outback into its own nameplate, further emphasizing these attributes, and the World's First Sport Utility Wagon was born. Eventually, the Outback would go on to become an integral component of Subaru's transition into a brand synonymous with adventure.
Now Subaru is taking things a step further with the all-new 2022 Outback Wilderness™. In this blog, we'll give you a quick overview of what's in store for the most rugged and capable Outback ever.
Adventurous Performance
The Outback is already one of the most capable vehicles in its class, thanks to standard attributes like 8.7 inches of ground clearance, Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive, and the X-MODE advanced traction management system. The Outback Wilderness™ further elevates the adventure potential, boasting a class-leading 9.5 inches of clearance and suspension specially tuned for improved all-terrain stability while retaining Outback's signature on-road comfort and handling.
In addition to revised suspension, the Outback Wilderness™ also features redesigned bumpers, increasing its approach angle (from 18.6 to 20 degrees), ramp breakover angle (19.4 to 21.2), and departure angle (21.7 to 23.6). Additionally, the Outback Wilderness™ features a revised final drive ratio of 4.44:1, giving it more available low-end torque for improved climbing ability, even on gravel. The Outback Wilderness™ also features standard dual-function X-MODE with extra settings for Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud.
The Outback Wilderness™ features exclusive matte-black 17-inch alloy wheels wrapped in Yokohama GEOLANDAR® all-terrain tires, plus a standard full-size spare stored under the cargo area.
Under the hood, the Outback Wilderness™ finds its motivation a 2.4-liter turbocharged BOXER engine that produces 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque, achieves EPA-estimated mpg ratings of 22 city and 26 highway, and has a 3,500-pound towing capacity.
In-Vehicle Tech and Exclusive Features
Subaru envisioned owners using a rooftop tent while on the trail, which is why the Outback Wilderness™ features a fixed ladder-type roof rack system with a static load limit of 700 pounds. On the inside, the seats feature StarTex water-repellant upholstery, with bold copper-colored contrast stitching to match the Anodize Copper-finish accents on the meter rings, sifter, and steering wheel. The Outback Wilderness™ also comes standard with brushed aluminum pedals, branded all-weather floor mats, and waterproof materials on the rear seatback and cargo tray.
From behind the wheel, owners can enjoy an integrated cockpit experience via the STARLINK® 11.6-inch Multimedia Plus touchscreen, which includes direct touch controls for infotainment HVAC, X-MODE, and other vehicle settings. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and integrated Navigation is available as part of a package that includes a power moonroof and Reverse Automatic Braking.
