"It's what makes a Subaru a Subaru." It's a tagline you've likely heard many times, usually in relation to some abstract notion that represents the brand more than its products. But when it comes to Subaru's lineup of cars and crossovers, there are also a few tangibles common to each model that make them unique in their respective segments. Last month we told you about the Subaru BOXER engine's history and benefits, which include improved balance, smoother operation, and space/cost savings. In this blog, we'll shift focus to what is perhaps Subaru's most defining attribute, Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive (SAWD).
First introduced in 1972 as an option for the Subaru Leone wagon, SAWD was originally a part-time mechanical system that required the driver to activate it at their discretion. In 1986, The Subaru XT saw the first implementation of full-time SAWD, with an electronically controlled variant introduced the following year. And ever since 1996, almost every Subaru vehicle (except the BRZ rear-wheel-drive sports car) has included SAWD as standard equipment on all trim levels.
Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive Characteristics and Benefits
Engineered from the ground up, Subaru's SAWD system was not an adaptation of a two-wheel-drive platform. In the SAWD setup, the engine is mounted in-line with the drive train. This central positioning allows for optimal weight distribution and, in turn, better balance. And unlike typical part-time systems, SAWD powers all four wheels at all times, meaning it doesn't wait for slippage to occur to activate. It also ensures power isn't wasted by automatically distributing it to the wheels with the most traction.
SAWD's central positioning also has the benefit of seamless power transfer without the need for additional routing components. A less-complex design results in improved AWD efficiency and lower maintenance costs. Combined with the smaller space requirements of Subaru's BOXER engine, this allows Subaru to produce AWD vehicles at a cost not far above 2WD designs.
